The Statistics Demonstrate Why We Need Masks

This weekend, Michigan put a new set of requirements in place. They decided that we here in Michigan are going to take a set back when it comes to how we handle in person meetings, working in an office, and what activities we are allowed to participate in over the upcoming weeks. The current restrictions are set to go into effect November 18th and will run till the first week of December.

What I felt compelled to talk about this week is how as a nation we continue to think COVID is just a flu and how we should not have to wear a mask or social difference.

First off we have to examine the cases we have had worldwide and within the United States.

If we look at the CDC COVID tracker, we can see that cases continue to spike in the US. The tracker allows us to check the different states as well. We can see most states have spikes and then decreases. But we have some states that just have a steady increase in cases. This is interesting because if we look at those states that have seen spikes and decreases, but there is not a consistent pattern to this. What we do know for sure is that there is a huge spike in total overall US cases.

What I then want to look at is the total cases. The United States has a total of 11.18 Million cases. The world has a total of 54.8 Million cases. That is a total of 20.4% of all cases are in the United States. Our World Population is listed at 7.7 Billion people while America makes up 331 Million of those people giving us 4.3% of the total population. If we are to continue to look at the numbers, then we should look at the death totals. The total coronavirus deaths for the whole world are 1.32 Million with the United States coming in at 247,000 deaths. We make up a total of 18.7% of the total deaths for the virus.

So let’s reexamine these facts a second. Our population only makes up 4.3% of the world population but we are 20.4% of the total coronavirus cases and 18.7% of the coronavirus deaths. That is the worst thing for the US. I mean even if we say we test more people why would our deaths be so high? Why would we be leading the nation in cases and deaths? The next closest nation is India which has 16.1% of the total cases with 1.39 Billion people making up 17.9% of the total world population. This statistic correlates closely and it is not surprising to see this. The next highest cases of death is in Brazil with them holding the second place medal for 12.5% of all coronavirus related deaths. Their population only makes up 2.73% of the world population. But what does the politics in Brazil have that is similar to the United States? A President who has little concern for the virus and has taken this about as seriously as Donald Trump has.

What does this all mean and why did I feel the need to wax poetic on the issue?

With all the cases rising and all the people complaining that Michigan is going back into a lock down, I felt that we needed to have a serious one on one about this. We had events all over the US this weekend protesting the election results, many of whom were not wearing a mask. This continues to show the Trump disinformation campaign and their complete lack of care for this virus. Trump has done little to nothing to help this and people in Michigan want to impeach a governor over a few more restrictions.

I get it. It is easier to sit in your house and complain and call to action. And lord knows that we will see more campaigns in Michigan to try and oust Whitmer from her office. But I ask a serious question, what do you purpose then? What would you do to try and stem the rising trend of death and sickness? If you are so knowledgeable to the point that you know she will crush our economy and that she is wrong in how she is handling it, then volunteer to help her. Stop complaining because the numbers fucking show that she is right to impose restrictions because we have no other way to stop this tide until a vaccine is safely in hand.

Because folks I am here to tell you that as of July we are on track to have an extra 204,000 deaths over the number normally have. This is not even including the total number of deaths that normally increase each year. So if we are the leading nation of coronavirus cases and of deaths, and we are well over the ratio of population of the world, then tell me why again you can not wear a mask? Tell me why you can not social distance? Tell me why you feel that it is necessary to constantly try and get rid of the governor without offering legitimate solutions that can be used to help stem the rising deaths and cases that are wreaking havoc on our country.

Because the way I see it, is either you are a selfish individual who cares nothing for the lives of others and can not seem to grasp compassion or empathy for another human. OR you have to have bought into the fake news conspiracy theories that continue to allow people to not use the harder critical thinking skills that seem to elude you when it comes to accepting the inevitable destruction path this virus is taking us down.
